BDP-S550 Pros & Cons
: Pros
My Sony BDP-S550 Blu-Ray Disk player from Dell arrived last night, and I had it connected via HDMI to my Sony STR-G720 AV Receiver in less than 5 minutes after taking the player out of the box. My receiver then connects via HDMI to my Sony 52 inch LCD TV. The Sony AV receiver has "active" HDMI ports so it can act on the signals coming in. I then popped in my fist Blu-Ray disk - Miami Vice - and started enjoying the movie. Picture quality was great as was the sound - initially.
Cons
Two issues occurred while watching the movie. The first, the picture went completely black for a few seconds during the first three minutes of the movie. The TV displayed a "NO SIGNAL" message, and then the picture reappeared. Not sure what caused this to happen. Second issue, about half way through the movie, the sound all of a sudden became very "staticy" and "crackly" making it very difficult to near impossible to understand what was being said. This issue continued until the end of the movie. I then started the movie again, and this time there was no picture drop-out at the point where it occured before. I then Fast Forwarded to the point were the sound went bad, and this time it was fine. Again, I have no idea what may have caused this to happen.
Additional Thoughts
First, anyone considering buying this unit needs to know that these are "refurbished to be like new" units - not "absolutely brand new, never used, never taken out of the box" units. Second, Sony does NOT supply an HDMI cable in the box with the player, so be sure to buy one if that is how you want to connect it. The two issues I mentioned before MAY have been caused by the fact that the unit was "cold" from being on the delivery truck all day in sub-freezing conditions. One last thought, I am not sure that the cost of a Blu-Ray player and Blu-Ray movie justify the difference between a standard DVD movie and a good upconverting DVD player in terms of the viewing experience.
